Writing Prompt: Smell
This week’s writing prompt focuses on one of the least used senses.
Creativity can stem from any of the five senses, whether it’s the sight of a beautiful woman or the sound of a giggling child, but sometimes the most creative of scenes can arise from an everyday smell.
Stop for a moment and take in the air around you—what are you reminded of?
Perhaps there’s the sweet smell of baking nearby and you’re taken back to your grandmother’s kitchen, where you spent all your Saturday afternoons that one summer learning her secrets. Or does the bitter odor of stale coffee hold you frozen as you relive that moment, years ago, when the love of your life broke your heart in a rundown coffee shop?
Since I can’t actually leave you with a smell, here’s a pretty picture of some green grass. Take a minute and close your eyes. Imagine it’s spring, and the smell of freshly cut grass tickles your nose.
Where are you? What’s happening? What do you feel, hear, see, taste?
Be creative and remember to share your thoughts in the comment section below. Have fun!
