Diva Interview: Sarah Hansen of Okay Creations

Sarah Hansen is the owner of Okay Creations, a book cover design company that has achieved overnight success with many of her creations  seen on the New York Times Bestseller List, USA Today Bestseller List, and Amazon’s Bestseller List, to name a few. Over the last year, Sarah has made beautiful covers for big name authors Colleen Hoover, Abbi Glines, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Nichole Chase. Her work is impeccable, and it’s no wonder so many authors are clamoring to get her to design their covers.

Interview:

Q: Sarah, when you’re designing a book cover how do you get inspiration for each individual piece?

A: Well… I really don’t know how to answer that.  It sounds incredibly cheesy, but it sort of just comes to me when I am image searching. I kind of just get this feeling that I should use a certain image as the base of the overall design.

Q: How do you help make your covers more marketable for authors?

A: Bold, bright font. Pretty picture. Interesting picture. Easy to read. Bookshelf ready. I guess? Ha!

Q: You’re a mother; how do you find time to work and juggle a family?

A: I’m not very good at it. I feel guilty all the time that my kids have a mother who never leaves the computer.

Q: How did it feel to see one of your covers get on the some of the bestsellers lists?

A:  Pretty cool, although I love reading so much that I get much more thrilled for certain stories to receive that recognition, not my covers.

Q: What is your favorite genre to make covers for?

A:  I am not sure. Easiest? New adult. Hardest? Young adult. Very fine line there. I also enjoy doing some heavy photo manipulation with fantasy/paranormal every once in a while.

Q: Do you try to read the books you’re designing for?

A: Never.  Clogs my creativity.  I won’t even read them after I am finished with the cover.  I am a very picky reader and I don’t want anything a client writes to affect my designs of their future covers.

Q: Lastly, what advice do you have for authors about book design?

A: Treat it the same as your story inside.  You want the best representation for your book.  Bad covers make me think the author doesn’t care about their words.

One-word questions:

(I totally stole this idea from James Lipton on The Actor’s Studio, lol)

Q: Where in the world would you wish you could go right now?

A: Antarctica

Q: One word to describe your true love.

A: Stubborn

Q: Favorite drink

A: Ginger Beer Mojito (sorry three words)

Q: Fried cockroaches: Would you eat that?

A: Never

Q: Are you a diva?

A: There is another word that describes me better.  Oh!  Damn, that was not one word. Okay, no.  I am not.
